Its spine-chilling screeches, snarling growl, black fur and reputed bad temper led to early European settlers naming it "devil". Devils are widespread in Tasmania, from the coast to the mountains. The Devil is nocturnal and is the size of a small dog with a big head and powerful claws and jaws. They have up to 4 babies each year, which stay in the pouch together for about 15 weeks.
