The Nutcrackers that we know today resembling kings and soldiers originated in Germany many centuries ago and were made by village woodcarvers. A nut was placed in the 'mouth' of the dolls and a lever on the back closed the lower jaw to crush the nut. According to early German folklore, Nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and to protect your home. The popularity of the famous ballet "The Nutcracker Suite", still performed throughout the world at Christmas time, has led to a continuing interest in the collection of decorative Nutcrackers today.
